Belgrade-based company Novodex, within its Implant Academy, hosted one of the greatest experts in the field of implantology, an innovator with great experience and probably the most recognizable expert in the field of implantology, Dr. Paulo Malo. For those few of you who do not know who dr Malo is, it’s enough to say that Dr Malo is the inventor of the All-on-4® protocol. In addition, Dr Malo is an inventor of famous Malo Clinic Bridge, as well as a Nobel Speedy implants, as well as founder, president and CEO of Malo Clinic, which has 30 representatives on five continents.

Dr Malo agreed to a short interview for our portal, and Novodex has provided great credit for the interview. Read on below what is the All-on-4® protocol, what are its benefits, how the protocol came into being, and what Dr. Malo thinks about the future of implantology and whether we can expect new innovations.

Although everyone who knows something about implantology, should know all about the All-on-4® concept, could you start by briefly explaining what is All-on-4® and what are the indications when this concept should be used.

The MALO CLINIC Protocol (All-on-4® + MALO CLINIC Bridge) consists of full-arch rehabilitation on maxilla or mandible with an immediate fixed prosthesis supported by four implants inserted in immediate function (two anterior axial implants, two posterior implants distally tilted) where jaw bone is available.

What benefits does your concept provide for patients and dentists?

The benefits of the MALO CLINIC Protocol (All-on-4® + MALO CLINIC Bridge) include performing the oral rehabilitation in a short period of time (in a single visit with a minimally invasive procedure even for patients with virtually no bone volume), with low uncertainty, immediately providing a dentition with functional (chewing, phonetically, hygienically) and aesthetic qualities; and by avoiding painful, costly and risky bone transplant.

How did you come up with the idea of creating an All-on-4® concept? What has prompted you to come out with this solution?

I came up with the idea of creating the All-on-4® concept because I was not satisfied with the rehabilitation options (or lack of them) for the majority of patients. Patients who were healthy, had good bone volume, did not smoke, etc, were the ones eligible for rehabilitation. But those patients represented the minority, not the norm! What about the majority of patients who had one or more of these exclusion criteria? Why shouldn’t they have the chance to be rehabilitated? That’s what prompt me to develop a concept that could overcome these limitations.

This is one of the currently most popular implantology methods. How do you feel as the creator of the most popular method that has brought back a smile to the faces of thousands of patients?

I am happy that such protocol enables an instantaneous boost to the quality of life for those rehabilitated, but I am never fully satisfied…There is always something left to be improved.

Are you steel working on improvements to your concept? Can we expect another innovation in the future?

The All-on-4® concept has been in constant development and improvement over the years. There are always improvements and innovations within this concept. We are always one step ahead, so yes, you can definitely expect other innovations in the near future.

With the aesthetic requirements of the 21st century, implantology is becoming more and more popular in the world, although it is a relatively costly treatment. In your opinion, can we expect an even bigger growth in the implant market?

Absolutely. We must not forget that more than 240 million people around the world are partially or completely edentulous and the overall life expectancy is increasing every year.

How do you see the future of implantology?

I see the future of Implantology as an era where oral rehabilitation assumes its vital importance making it accessible to everyone and not so dependent on economic capacity / on its affordability.

Everyone should be given the chance to have a healthy mouth, to increase their probability chances of keeping an excellent health condition!
